Libraries win reprieve as council restores weekend hours

A last-minute amendment restores Sunday hours at six branches that had been slated to close on weekends.

Port Avalon’s public libraries will keep their Sunday hours after the city council approved a last-minute budget amendment on Monday, reversing cuts that would have closed six branches on weekends.

The $1.8 million amendment, introduced by Councillor Amira Haddad, was funded by trimming the city’s consulting budget. It passed 9–2.

“Libraries are where kids do homework when there’s no quiet at home, where people apply for jobs, where older residents come to stay warm,” Haddad said. “Sunday is when working families can actually get there.”

Library director Paul Brennan said the system would also extend evening hours at the Lowmarsh and Harbour Point branches, which serve the city’s busiest after-school programs.
