Air traffic controllers’ strike grounds hundreds of flights across Europe

Airlines cancelled more than 900 flights. Unions say a second day of action is possible next week.

More than 900 flights were cancelled across Europe on Monday as air traffic controllers walked out over staffing and pay, leaving travelers stranded at airports from Madrid to Milan.

Eurocontrol, which coordinates the region’s airspace, said overflights were also being rerouted, adding delays for flights that were not directly affected.

“Controllers have been working with staffing levels that are not safe in the long term,” a union spokesperson said in a statement. Airlines urged governments to guarantee overflights during strikes.
