Harbour Point shops brace for a winter of construction

Drainage work will close parts of Harbour Street for four months. Owners want help.

Owners of small shops on Harbour Street say they support the drainage work that will tear up their street this winter. They are less sure they will survive it.

“Nobody wants another flood. But four months of jackhammers and no parking is a long time,” said Mei Lin, who runs a bakery on the corner of Harbour and Fifth.

The city said it will offer grants of up to $15,000 to affected businesses and keep at least one sidewalk open at all times.
