The Avalon Mariners are going to the playoffs. Rookie Luis Ortega’s two-run double in the bottom of the ninth beat Harborview 5–4 on Saturday night and ended an 11-year postseason drought in front of a sellout crowd.
“I just wanted to put it in play,” Ortega said, still soaked from the celebration. “I didn’t see where it landed. I just heard the crowd.”
The Mariners open the wild-card series on the road on Tuesday.
