Right-to-repair rules mean your next phone battery could be a five-minute fix

New rules require replaceable batteries and parts availability for seven years.

Phones sold from 2027 will need batteries that owners can replace with ordinary tools, under rules finalized this week. Manufacturers must also make spare parts available for seven years after a model is discontinued.

“This is the biggest change to how phones are designed in a decade,” said repair technician Diego Alvarez, who runs a shop in Lowmarsh.

Manufacturers said they would comply, though some warned the rules could make devices slightly thicker.
