Construction on the 62-turbine project begins next spring, 25 kilometers offshore.

A 62-turbine offshore wind farm 25 kilometers off the Avalon coast received its final federal permit on Monday, clearing the way for construction to begin next spring.

When complete in 2029, the project is expected to generate enough electricity for about 400,000 homes, according to the developer, Atlantic Breeze Energy.

“It’s the single largest step the region has taken toward its clean energy targets,” said state energy commissioner Ruth Abara. Some fishing groups have raised concerns about access to traditional grounds.
